About this tool
The percentage calculator has three modes. "X% of Y" multiplies a percentage by a number, which is the most common type of percentage calculation, used for things like discounts and tax. "X is what % of Y" works in reverse, telling you the percentage relationship between two values. "% Change" computes the percentage increase or decrease from one number to another.
All three modes update results instantly as you type. The tool handles decimal inputs and displays a sign prefix (+ or -) on percentage change results so you can immediately see if the value went up or down.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate percentage change between two numbers?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the absolute value of the old number, then multiply by 100. For example, going from 80 to 100: (100 - 80) / 80 * 100 = 25%.
What does "X is what percent of Y" mean?
It finds what fraction X is of Y, expressed as a percentage. Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. So 50 is 25% of 200 because 50 / 200 * 100 = 25.
Can percentage change be negative?
Yes. A negative percentage change means the value decreased. Going from 100 to 80 gives -20%.
