About this tool
This word counter gives you a quick breakdown of your text: words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time. Paste in anything from a tweet to a full article and the stats update instantly.
The tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type gets sent to a server. It works well for checking essay word limits, estimating how long a blog post will take to read, or just getting a fast character count for social media posts with length restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is based on an average reading speed of roughly 250 words per minute. The tool divides your total word count by that number and rounds to the nearest minute.
Does the character count include spaces?
The tool shows both counts. "Characters" includes spaces and punctuation, while "Characters (no spaces)" strips all whitespace before counting.
How are paragraphs detected?
Paragraphs are separated by one or more blank lines. A single block of text with no blank lines counts as one paragraph.
