About this tool

Temperature conversion works differently from most other unit conversions because the scales have different zero points. You can't just multiply by a fixed factor. This tool handles the offset math for you, converting between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin instantly.

Celsius and Kelvin share the same degree size (a 1-degree change in Celsius equals a 1-degree change in Kelvin), but Kelvin starts at absolute zero rather than the freezing point of water. Fahrenheit degrees are smaller: a 1-degree Fahrenheit change is only 5/9 of a Celsius degree. The Fahrenheit scale sets water's freezing point at 32F and boiling point at 212F, giving 180 divisions between those two reference points compared to 100 for Celsius.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value, then multiply by 5/9. For example, 72F becomes (72 - 32) * 5/9 = 22.22C.

What is absolute zero?

Absolute zero is 0 Kelvin, which equals -273.15 Celsius or -459.67 Fahrenheit. It is the theoretical lowest possible temperature.

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?

Celsius and Fahrenheit read the same value at -40 degrees. Below that point, the Fahrenheit number is lower; above it, Fahrenheit is higher.
